MC or Host?

These two get used interchangeably in event briefs, but they're not doing the same job.

The host

A host is there to welcome people in and set a warm, easy tone. Think of them as the face that greets the room and keeps things feeling comfortable, often without being tied to a strict schedule.

• Welcomes guests as they arrive

• Sets the overall tone and warmth of the room

• Keeps conversation and energy moving informally

The MC

An MC is running the structure of the event, not just the vibe of it.

• Owns the run sheet and keeps the program on time

• Cues speakers, presentations, awards and transitions

• Reads the room and adjusts pacing, energy or humour in real time

• Handles the unscripted moments, a late speaker, a tech hiccup, without the audience noticing

Where events get this wrong

A lot of corporate events book "a host" and expect the schedule to run itself, then wonder why the night drifts 40 minutes behind by the time awards are handed out. The warmth of a host and the structure of an MC are two different skill sets, and bigger or more structured events usually need both, even if one person is doing both jobs.
