Speeches can make or break the room, and it's rarely about what's said.

Get it wrong and you'll see:

• Energy dropping before the best speech even starts

• Awkward silences while people work out who's next

• Guests checking phones halfway through

The fix:

• Open with someone warm, not necessarily the funniest

• Save your strongest storyteller for last

• Keep a buffer speaker in your back pocket in case someone pulls out last minute

Final thought
